The task was to paint this home as it may have looked around 1940. I was given the black and white NYC “tax lot photo” from 1940 and asked to paint it in color.

The paintings I make of buildings are meant to capture the exact details to memorialize the facade as it appears now. Each painting then becomes a time capsule or documentation of the era. Often I photograph the building and refer to Google Maps Street View to answer visual questions as I paint.
